Shaping the Future? - Wim Smit

In memoriam Wim Smit

This paper deals with issues as how far and under which conditions the future can be shaped by actions in the present time. Looking back it looks like our near past almost was not a logical consequence of the past. History is often made in our present time and it is interesting to watch that many writers on history try to identify a framework in which all the historic events are placed in a logical and continuous sequence which does not confront our present thinking processes too much. Sudden events, or discontinuities are difficult to handle and the unexpected which often occurred in history is often neglected or not seen or accepted.

Paper written at the request of Prof. George Lasker for the special IIAS Symposium in Marianske Lazne, Czech Republic, August 2011.
